Description/Duties

The Public Justice Center (PJC)

The Public Justice Center pursues systemic change to build a just society. The PJC uses legal advocacy tools to pursue social justice, economic and racial equity, and fundamental human rights for people who are struggling to provide for their basic needs. The PJC is a non-profit civil rights law firm that provides advice and representation to clients with low incomes, advocates before legislatures and government agencies, and collaborates with community and advocacy organizations. Founded in 1985, the PJC is a leader in public interest law reform in Maryland and nationally. For more about the PJC, visit our website: www.publicjustice.org.

The Position and Core Duties

The Development Assistant will play a critical role in the PJC’s capacity to advocate for systemic change – providing logistical and administrative support to enable the PJC to meet its ambitious annual fundraising goals and regularly engage with supporters. The Development Assistant reports to the Director of Development and works closely with members of the development, communications and branding, finance and administration, and executive teams.

Core duties of this position include:

  • Working closely with the development team to create and implement a comprehensive annual fundraising plan.
  • Becoming and serving as the development team’s in-house expert in our development/communications database (EveryAction) and in the reporting functions of our case management database (LegalServer).
  • Processing donations, pledges, pledge reminders, pledge payments, gift receipts, donor acknowledgements, and supporters’ recognition and communication preferences accurately and timely. This includes gifts made directly to the Public Justice Center and through third-party processors.
  • Establishing standards and practices for entering and updating supporter data in EveryAction to ensure data integrity.
  • Creating reports for reconciliation between EveryAction and QuickBooks, and providing donation information requested during the annual audit.
  • Extracting and verifying data from LegalServer to support grant reporting.
  • Providing logistical and administrative support for mailed and emailed fundraising appeals and donor communications, including the annual report, annual appeal, law firm campaign, and newsletters.
  • Supporting members of the development team and the Executive Director in developing and executing donor cultivation and stewardship plans.
  • Providing logistical and administrative support for the planning and execution of events, including anniversary events, Lawyers’ Alliance events, and other fundraising and donor relationship-building events.
  • Coordinating the PJC’s charitable solicitation registration renewals and presence on charity watchdog sites such as Charity Navigator and GuideStar/Candid.
  • Actively participating in development team meetings, all-staff meetings, and organization-wide initiatives, including our race equity work. This includes taking notes at development team meetings and assigning follow-up tasks.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position and may require more than 40 hours in a workweek, including the potential for evening and weekend work. This position is based in Baltimore with the option to work remotely up to two days per week.
