Description: Whitman-Walker Clinic has one (1) opening for a part-time senior staff attorney to specialize in nondiscrimination law and workplace rights, including insurance and other fringe benefits, for clients living with HIV/AIDS and for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) clients facing discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
Whitman-Walker Clinic is a non-profit community-based health organization serving the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region. Established by and for the gay and lesbian community, our Clinic is comprised of diverse staff and volunteers who provide or facilitate the delivery of a range of health care and community services. Whitman-Walker Clinic is especially committed to ending the suffering of all those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Since 1986, Whitman-Walker Clinic’s Legal Services Program has provided pro bono counseling and representation to persons living with HIV/AIDS on a variety of civil legal issues related to an HIV diagnosis. We have two offices: at the Clinic’s Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center, located at 1701 14th Street, NW, and the Max Robinson Center, located at 2301 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, SE, in the District of Columbia. The Senior Staff Attorney will be based at our main office in Northwest D.C., but may meet with clients from time to time at our satellite office in Southeast D.C.
Responsibilities/Duties: Legal Services is seeking a part-time staff attorney (20 hours/week) to perform a variety of tasks, including client intake and counseling; investigation and analysis of cases; legal research; direct representation of clients; training and mentoring of volunteer attorneys and non-attorney public benefits volunteers; public speaking to client and provider groups and other community outreach activities; preparation of training and resource materials for volunteers; and assisting the Legal Services Director and managing attorneys with various aspects of program administration. The attorney will specialize in handling discrimination and workplace rights cases – through direct representation and as a mentor to volunteer attorneys handling such cases. There will also be opportunities to serve as co-counsel with law firms litigating cases of particular significance.
Qualifications/Skills: The applicant should be a member of the District of Columbia Bar. Membership in the Maryland and/or Virginia Bar is a plus, as is the ability to communicate in Spanish. The applicant should have a minimum of five (5) years of experience practicing employment and/or civil rights law; and be familiar with the Americans With Disabilities Act and other disability discrimination laws. The applicant should also have excellent legal research and analysis, writing and oral advocacy skills. We are seeking an experienced attorney with a demonstrated ability to handle complex cases effectively with minimal oversight. Applicants also should have a commitment to working with people living with HIV/AIDS; persons of diverse sexual orientations, genders, racial and ethnic backgrounds; and indigent and low-income clients.
Salary/Benefits: An average of 20 hours/week, on a regular schedule set by the Legal Services Director. The salary in the mid- to upper $30,000’s, depending on experience. Note: this part-time position does not include health insurance or other fringe benefits. This is a union position.

Staff attorneys are assigned to work in one or more of the PJC’s projects. Each project is led by an attorney who is the Director of that project. As a member of the work team on that project, the attorney will be working with other attorneys and staff within the PJC, and collaborating with allies and partners outside the PJC. There is an immediate opening in the Workplace Justice Project, involving workers’ issues and employment law, and a potential new position that may include work on health and public benefits, educational rights of homeless and foster children; or other poverty law or civil rights issues. Knowledge, experience, or interest in these subjects is desirable.
Qualifications/Skills: • Maryland bar admission or admission to another state bar with ability to practice in Maryland until being barred in Maryland is required. • Three or more years of experience as an attorney involving client representation and litigation. This position is directed towards an attorney with 3 to 10 years of experience. • The ability to speak and write Spanish is strongly preferred. • Other relevant skills and experience include legislative advocacy / lobbying; community organizing or mobilization; public relations and educational campaigns; and coalition building. • Demonstrable commitment to social justice advocacy and public interest law. • Ability to work collaboratively with others both in and outside of the PJC, including clients, other advocacy organizations, coalition members, governmental officials, and attorneys. • excellent legal analytic and strategic skills. • excellent legal writing and research skills. • strong communication and collaborative skills. • a strong work ethic, organizational and time management abilities, and capacity for juggling multiple responsibilities.

Description: The Homeless Persons Representation Project (HPRP), a non-profit legal services and advocacy organization, seeks to hire a part-time law clerk for the spring semester to assist its housing attorney representing subsidized housing recipients in eviction and subsidy termination matters.

Description: The ACLU of Maryland is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the civil liberties and civil rights of the citizens of Maryland. The Maryland ACLU's Legislative Program promotes and protects civil liberties and civil rights by appealing to policy makers in the Maryland General Assembly as well as local and federal governments. Issues comprising our docket include voting rights and election protection, free speech, education reform, privacy rights, abolition of the death penalty, due process and abuse of power, protecting reproductive freedom, and civil marriage equality for same sex couples. The Legislative Program works in coalition with other organizations on shared priorities and with the Board of Directors and staff to develop an annual state legislative agenda, research issues, draft legislation, prepare and distribute educational material, and meet with policymakers and other advocates. During the state’s legislative session from January through April, the Program promotes the legislative agenda, reviews bills, prepares testimony, arranges for hearing witnesses, attends hearings, delivers testimony and advocates the ACLU position on pending legislation in Annapolis. It reports regularly to the legislative committee, staff, membership and Board of Directors.
