What are the criteria that MLSC uses to make funding decisions? A. By statute, the Corporation’s funds must be used by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to provide legal assistance to eligible clients in noncriminal proceedings or other matters. The definition of “legal assistance” means the legal representation of eligible clients and includes training, research, coordination with private attorneys and other activities necessary to insure the delivery of quality legal services. MLSC gives priority to the provision of direct legal services to individual clients. Specific criteria are provided in the general instructions with the grant application packet. For a more detailed description of funding guidelines, potential grantees should review Maryland Code, Human Services, Article 11. -back to top- Q5. Is the application process the same for a new applicant as for a current grantee? A. A nonprofit organization interested in applying for a grant for the first time should send a brief description of the proposed program to the Corporation. If the proposed program appears to fit grant guidelines, the Corporation will request a formal application and more detailed information. Current grantees as well as new applicants are invited to the informational meeting at the beginning of the year to get new application packets. If you are not able to attend the meeting, contact MLSC at 410.576.9494 or toll-free at 1.800.492.1340 or email to receive the application packet by regular mail or email or download the grant application packet from this site. -back to top- |
